to a higher likelihood of germs, like
the diaper changing area, or what Dr.
Tanner refers to a germ hot spot. Such
areas must be cleaned with products
labeled as a disinfectant, antibacteri-
al, or have the words, "kills germs." A
product labeled "hygienic," for exam-
ple, won't necessarily kills germs.
While these products may contain
harsh chemicals, Dr. Tanner said it's
important to use them to clean hot
spots completely, but it's best to follow
the cleanings with a water rinse to wipe
away the chemical residue.
Clean from less dirty areas to hot
spots. Begin by cleaning the nursery in
places that are less dirty than those iden-
tified as hot spots to avoid moving the
germs from place to place.
"If you wipe the diaper area with a rag,
and then go wipe another area, you've
just transferred germs," said Dr. Tanner.
"Start from the dresser
to the door knob, then
the toys, and then hit the
germ center to reduce
cross-contamination."
Consider pets. Pets
are wonderful compan-
ions but be careful. Birds,
reptiles and amphibians,
carry dangerous salmonel-
la and another germ called
campylobacter in their
digestive systems natu-
rally, but can be fatal to
children and even adults,
so it's best to keep those
pets away from your baby
and out of your little one's
room.
