Stomping Through the Weeds

Fruits: Berries and nuts are eaten by birds and mammals, which
later either poop them or bury them. Look for red berries such as
rose hips, barberry, purple-flowering raspberry or staghorn sumac.
Acorns and hickory nuts are round, with hard shells that when ripe
turn from green to brown. Black walnuts turn black.
Flyers: These seeds have silky fluff attached, so they can float
through the air. Milkweed is the easiest to spot, because it is white,
but other plants have seeds with tiny bits of grayish fluff, such as
goldenrod and aster.
