The Common Core State Standards focus on core conceptual understandings and procedures starting in the
early grades. Below is a sample of how the standards progress throughout grade school.
Language arts
First Grade
Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.
Fourth Grade
Describe how a narrator's point of view influences how events are described.
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text.
Mathematics
First Grade
Count to 100 by ones and by tens.
Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, drawings, sounds, expressions or equations.
Fourth Grade
Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.
Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers.
