Register now for kids' classes Is art important for your child's development? According to Pat Sexton, director of programming at Mill Street Loft (MSL), "Creativity is essential to learning. Art teaches children to develop points of view, solve prob- lems and foster self expression." Mill Street Loft Executive Director, Carole Wolf agrees. "All our programs are about building self-esteem while learning through the arts." For 33 years MSL has offered classes for children (and adults), many who have gone on to profes- sional careers in the arts and design. "The arts are a perfect vehicle for children because they are so naturally curious," says Pat. As more and more schools either limit or have eliminated their art education courses, MSL has become pivotal to art development for families living in the mid-Hudson Valley. Kids from 6 years old through high school can choose classes in art exploration, painting, drawing and sculpture. Both digital and tradi- tional photography are available for high school students. The classes are open to kids at all skill levels. "There is a complete arc of learning from a young age through the teen years, and it just keeps growing," says Pat. Classes begin the 2nd week of September. All the programs are taught by professional artists and each class is a 2-to-3 hour session. Classes are offered in Poughkeepsie, and new this year in Pawling and Red Hook. "We have developed a partner- ship with the Mizzentop Day School in Pawling, which just acquired new space to be used for all kinds of arts activities for the community," says Pat. MSL will also hold classes at the Arts Oasis in Red Hook. "Mill Street Loft has been asked to be the lead on the visual arts component in this excit- ing new space." Register now for fall classes. Great way to develop your kids' creativity.
