Approximately 48 hours later, I was contacted by a local instructor. We decided on a date and time and it was done. It's just that easy! What happens at a CPR party? Our instructor, Rob Kutler, ar- rived with his bags of CPR dolls and other materials. As everyone arrived, they signed in and I collected dona- tions for Rob. Our party started with a short infant CPR video. The video lasted about 20 minutes and demonstrated what to do if an infant is choking or is not breathing and CPR is needed. We then all had turns practicing on infant CPR dolls. Then Rob discussed the difference between adult CPR and choking. He demonstrated on the adult CPR doll Did you know? • Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4, and the number two cause of death among children ages 0-14. • For every drowning death, there are two near- death drown- ing events that lead to permanent brain damage and the need for lifelong care. • Up to 3 million children each year survive a drowning incident. • Twenty minutes of instruction in CPR is as effective as the stan- dard 4-hour course • A delay in CPR of 4-5 minutes decreases chances of survival by up to 40 percent • A delay in CPR of 10 minutes results in death 95 percent of the time • Seven out of 10 Americans feel unprepared to perform CPR when the need arises. — The CLAY Foundation (Continued on Page 32) Local CPR instructor Rob Kutler is surrounded by attendees at a recent CPR party.
