Mariah Warren Mariah Warren entered mother- hood with her share of scars from tussles with depression and anxiety. "Since I was 18 years old, I've struggled with depression and anxi- ety," she says. "I can function, but it has affected me. I get overwhelmed and anxious about major changes, so I don't always push myself." Change, of course, is the name of motherhood's game, a fact that Warren knew instinctively. "Growing up, I always pictured myself with a husband and two kids, but after getting married in 2000, every time we started getting serious about becoming parents, I would have a serious bout of anxiety," she says. As she saw more and more of her family members and close friends fl ourish with children, she fi nally de- cided to take the plunge, enlisting her psychiatrist and OB/GYN for help. Warren decided to do a medi- cation-free pregnancy, and while she had trouble sleeping and was plagued by anxiety, she talked through her concerns with her thera- pist and was able to allow herself to get excited for the birth of Benjamin (who is now 3). But the brief honeymoon with her young son passed all too quickly.
