week". There are quite a few feeding
disorders that include extreme pickiness
or food aversions as symptoms. If
you feel as though your child is to
the point of extreme pickiness, it is
best to speak with your pediatrician
and potentially have your child
evaluated by a speech-language
pathologist who specializes in feeding
disorders to determine the next step.
Q: My mother wouldn't let me leave
the table until I ate all of my vege-
tables. I hated it! Should I take this
approach with my kids? Am I just
being too lenient with them?
It depends on the situation. If your
child is a decent eater, but always
leaves one or two particular vegeta-
bles on their plate, but eats other veg-
etables at other times, I would chalk
it up to just not liking those certain
foods. I mean, as adults we don't like
every single vegetable, right?
However, kids have different taste
bud sensations than we, as adults,
do. They have stronger reactions to
bitter foods and tend to prefer sweet
foods. Makes sense why they'd react
with veggies. Plus, some kids need
up to 21 tries of any particular food
to determine if they actually like it!
I prefer an approach that reduces
pressure. Instead of giving a picky
eater an entire portion of a vegeta-
ble, I give one bite's worth on their
plate. I tell them that all I ask for
them to be "done with dinner" is to
take that bite. If they don't like it, no
problem, they can even spit it out.
The point is that the child took the
bite and tried it.
Q: I'm a working mom, and I've run
out of ideas to please the whole
family. We eat too much pasta, but
honestly, most nights I just want
my kids to eat. So I skip the vegeta-
bles and make food I know they'll
eat, like chicken nuggets or mac
