Help from the grocery chains Mainstream grocery stores are well aware that some of their business is being syphoned away by smaller specialty markets and newer, online shopping companies. In recognition of both the huge market potential of more health-conscious eaters and a bid for their budget, grocery chains like ShopRite have launched entire in-store depart- ments devoted to health, staffed by dietitians who provide cooking and nutrition lessons free-of-charge. "We encourage shoppers to make appointments with their ShopRite dietitian," says Sarah Daubman, the dietitian at Kingston's ShopRite. "ShopRite dietitians provide free nutrition services including personal shopping assistance. They can walk the aisles with parents and help them choose healthier versions of their family's favorite foods — all with a budget in mind. Many times the dietitians have coupons and product information so parents can try new foods with less risk to their wallet." Shopping the seasons will also cut down on costs in the produce aisle. Frozen vegetables are harvest- ed at their peak freshness — and they won't go bad — making them a fantastic go-to staple for side dishes, sauces, soups and stews. For parents who are just getting into cooking and nutrition or are concerned with how to structure their child's diet, the ShopRite dietician is available for free, private counseling appointments. Some stores (like the one in Monroe) even have Picky Eaters Support Groups. The ShopRite locations in Mont- gomery, Poughkeepsie, Ellenville, and Kingston all have a registered retail dietitian on staff.
