A MEMBER OF I t's been a hot and dry summer, and change is fi nally in the air in the Hudson Valley. You're probably already trading fi refl y spotting for stargaz- ing and hauling the sweat- ers down from the attic. And you might notice a few changes throughout these pages. Most notably, this page. After spending the past year interviewing parents all over the Valley for our "I am a Hudson Valley Parent" column, I'm honored to be taking over as the editor of Hudson Valley Parent magazine. Meet your child. . . before they're born For this issue I interviewed Erica Chase-Salerno, an energy intuitive from New Paltz. I tend to be a scientifi cally minded, skeptical kind of guy — more Scully than Mulder, if you will — but I was riveted to hear her descriptions of what it's like to convey messages between mothers-to-be and their unborn children. Because I've had a similar experience. About a year before my son was born, I was sitting in our childless house with my wife, having a quiet dinner (remember those?). We had spoken of having children in the past, but hadn't really set a timetable. Suddenly I had the overwhelming sense that someone was missing. I looked at the empty chair at the head of the table and couldn't be- lieve that there wasn't someone in it. This person who was going to make our lives seem inconceivable with- out them. I even got a clear sense of what this person's personality was going to be - and the ex- act way he'd make us feel every single day. It's been almost fi ve years since that moment, and every day my son proves me right. Erica told me in our conversa- tion that it's the children who choose the parents. I believe that's true because in that moment, it felt like our son chose us. We asked you if you've had similar experiences, and we're delighted to include some of your answers in this issue. Places for children with special needs There's lots of other good things in this issue to guide you along on your own journey. If you're a par- ent of a child with special needs you'll fi nd a great list of places to go with them. We take a look at the ever-growing "sandwich gener- ation" and what it means to have a multi-generational household. There's some exciting information about what the 3-D printing boom means for kids in the Hudson Valley. Secrets of eating out with kids For those of you who feel panic and fear every time you take your children out to eat (i.e., all of us,) we have advice on dining out from the people who know best: the wait- ers and managers who serve dozens of cranky kids every day. If you'd like to nominate someone for our "I am a Hudson Valley Parent" column, drop me a line at editor@excitingread.com. My inbox is always open. Now then. You've got kids to raise. We're here to help. A new editor. A new path. BRIAN PJ CRONIN Editor's Journal
