TOP 4 SUMMER FUN SPOTS TO ENJOY (Check out hvparent.com/100-things-to-do-this-summer-in-the-hudson-valley for more) Summertime! (and the living is easy…) H ooray for summer – because it's finally time to do the fun and out-and-about stuff that the entire family can enjoy. Of course there are swimming holes, amusement parks and awe- some indoor activities to explore, but here are some interesting facts about summer that you probably don't know: • Summer break for school chil- dren didn't become a thing until relatively recently. The big break wasn't observed everywhere until at least the early 1900s and before then, youngsters were usually only given respite from their studies to help their families with spring and fall farming. • The month of July is the hottest one on this part of the planet, which is probably why it's National Ice Cream Month. In the U.S., we eat an average of 20 quarts per person a year and vanilla is the most popular flavor (chocolate is second). • The popsicle was invented in 1905 in San Francisco when an 11-year-old accidently left his glass of soda outside and it froze. Cherry is the most favored American flavor. • We Americans each consume an average of 15 pounds of watermel- on a year. The fruit is a great way to help stay hydrated as it is about 92% water. • In 2012, 1,006 Australians ap- plied sunscreen at the same time, reaching their goal of setting a new world record. July is also the most dangerous time to go to the hospital, according to medical writer Alice Park, because medical students working as hospital residents graduate and leave for new hospitals just as brand new medical students are arriving. So stay hydrated, apply that sunscreen and keep emergency room visits off of your "to-do" list this month by doing what the families pictured here did – have fun as safely as possible. Shine on, summer. Shine on...
