TOP 4 STOPS FOR FALL FAMILY FUN: (Check out hvparent.com/fall-fun-roundup for more) A s leaves crunch underfoot, the nights get a little chilly and the amount of sunlight we see each day gets smaller and smaller, there's no mistaking the fact that autumn is off icially here. It may be the transitional weather season between summer and winter, but fall's unique character sets it apart from the seasons that precede and follow. Did you know: • Since there isn't enough light for photosynthesis during winter, trees begin to prepare in the fall by slowing down and eventually stopping their food production systems. The drop- ping seasonal temperatures trigger the breakdown of chlorophyll – the chemical that makes leaves green – while other chemicals, like carotene, remain to give the leaves their beauti- ful majestic colors. • During the fall equinox on the f irst day of the season, the sun shines directly on the equator, and day and night around the world are about 12 hours each. Every day after, the daylight hours get shorter and shorter until the spring equinox. • According to a 2011 study in the Journal of Aging Research, babies born during the fall are more likely to live to see their 100th birthdays than those born during the rest of the year. A whopping 30 percent of Americans over 100 years of age born between 1880 and 1895 were born during this season. But just because we have to don sweaters and scarves doesn't neces- sarily mean we have to wave goodbye to outdoor fun. If hiking or biking, picking apples and pumpkins, or jumping into a big ol' pile of leaves is your family's favorite fall past-time, there are lots of great adventures to be had this season. Take a page from the families who graced our photo spread this month and start falling for fall... Fal ling for fal l! Liam, 3, and Alexi, 6, Central Valley
