Feelings also come with what Tra- pani-Barber calls "emotional expres- sions" which include being angry, frustrated, or sad. By using these terms in a sentence, like, "I would be sad, too, if I missed my friend," the child learns how to express and understand their own feelings, she adds. Lessons from school Some schools work the idea of empathy into their day-to-day activ- ities. "Throughout the course of the day, teachers encourage children to build and maintain friendships by talking with each other, working and playing together, and by resolving conflicts by listening to all sides, and finding solutions that benefit all," says Millbrook Early Childhood Education Center co-director Allison Pitcairn. Activities focus on understanding another's point of view and experi- ence because it might be different from our own. One particular skill that can help identify feelings is working with the kids to "read" faces, tone and body language by "Empathy is something that continu- ally develops and strength- ens through- out the lifespan."
