The frequent snow storms and below freezing temperatures have everyone dreaming of summer days spent lounging on the edges of a Hudson Valley swimming hole. Every morning, as I scrape a new layer of ice from my windshield, I find myself wishing for some much needed fun in the sun. Sadly for me, my summer plans no longer include laughing with friends over friendship bracelets and games of tag at summer camp. I am a lifelong Orange County resident and spent my childhood summers at camps in my hometown. With the helpful guidance of CIT's and counselors, right before school started up again, the recreation department would host a camp-wide talent show. I will always remember the summer when I with three of my very best friends donned matching pink tee-shirts and denim skirts and performed a (what we considered) perfect routine to a hit Christina Aguilera song. Shockingly (not), we did not win that year's talent show but the memories made were prize enough. While you are reminiscing on your own camp memories, it is the perfect time to make plans for your kids for this coming year. Are you looking for a camp that will teach your child how to swim? Maybe you are on the hunt for a camp that will put a stop to summer brain drain once and for all. Or maybe you have a little artist on your hands who would love a camp where they can nurture their gifts or learn new skills. Whatever the case may be, the Hudson Valley is teeming with camps for all ages and interests. Here at Hudson Valley Parent, we realize the choice may be a daunting one. As always, we are here to help make the decision easier. We have gathered some of the most terrific camps the Hudson Valley has to offer so summer can be fantastic for you and your children. While summer is still in the planning stages, make the most of the rest of your winter. Once again we have rounded up tons of events to make sure every day is packed with fun. Kids climbing the walls after being stuck in the house during the last snow storm? Would you do anything to get your tween away from their phones and out of the house for a little while? From Mommy and Me classes, to a zine club for teens and everything in between, your family will be set for the next time the boredom blues strike. Are you worried your picky eaters aren't getting the nutrients they need? (Especially since they have been sustaining on cut-out cookies and chocolate Santas all winter long.) Don't worry! We have six ideas to help you take the struggle out of meal times. Make meal time a positive experience for the whole family by getting everyone involved serving whole, delicious foods kids will actually want to eat. An easy, budget-friendly meal that is also healthy? Music to a mother's ears! Is it summer yet? CASSIDY BRIGHTON Editor's Journal
