4 Hudson Valley Parent n Spring 2020 It's likely that the drop is because moms don't get the support they need from their doctors, family, friends and jobs and become overwhelmed. Still, breastfeeding has many benefits. • Breast milk provides baby with all the necessary nutrients for healthy develop- ment. It also contains antibodies to ward off common childhood illnesses. • Breastfeeding moms burn up to an extra 500 calories per day. • Breastfeeding reduces a woman's risk of breast and ovarian cancer later in life. It also lowers rates of obesity. • Infants breastfeed until they feel full and on average remove 67 percent of mom's available milk. With a bottle, babies typically feed until the bottle is empty. • Adults who were breastfed as babies are less likely to be overweight or obese and perform better in intelligence tests. • Breastfeeding exposes baby to dif- ferent tastes and smells, which can influ- ence a child's acceptance of food when weaning. • A mom's breast milk completes the develop- ment of baby's stomach lining, making it 15 times thicker than that of a for- mula-fed baby. • Nursing moms benefit from extra support; about 73 percent of moms get outside help for breast- feeding problems. • Breastfeeding helps babies regulate their breathing. • Breastfeeding soothes babies and can be a pain reliever, as breast milk con- tains endorphins that calm baby.
