The people who lived on the river began to fight back, most famously in 1963 when Con Edison sought to turn Storm King Mountain into the world's largest hydroelectric dam. In what is considered the birth of America's environmental move- ment, a group of concerned citi- zens formed a group called Scenic Hudson and eventually blocked Con Ed from building the plant. Sudden- ly the people of the Hudson Valley realized that the fate of the river was theirs to control. Groups like River- keeper and Clearwater joined Scenic Poet's Walk in Red Hook is a 128-acre park that features almost two miles of gently meandering trails with numerous scenic overlooks of the Hudson River, and plenty of wooden pavilions and benches to rest on along the way.
