When he's not seeing pint-sized patients in his office, he's spending his free time urging them to be creative and have fun outside, speaking to groups on nutrition and exercise, and providing treatment for children who otherwise can't afford medical care. That's what Dr. Fenner loves about The Children's Medical Group. CMG is all about kids, and all our staff members excel at what they do. Nine "local" offices offer comprehensive medical services from birth through adolescence. Need a same-day appointment? We've got that. Responsive emergency intervention or superlative care for chronic illness? We're all over that, too. Caring for kids isn't our business, it's our life. And we wouldn't have it any other way. Dave Knows Kids. Many thanks to all those who voted for Dr. Fenner, Dr. Dalwadi, Dr. Gruszko, Dr. Habert, Dr. Lessin, Dr. Gearing, Dr. Aplasca, and Dr. Sulzer as their "FAVORITE DOCS!" Make an appoint- ment with your favorite doc, and find them on our website. Breastfeeding is good for moms, too New moms D id you know that the Amer- ican Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breast- feeding for baby's first six months? However, only 13 percent of new moms actually follow through to the six-month mark. New moms often don't know where to turn to find reliable in- formation and can often feel over- whelmed. It's helpful for nursing moms to get support from others; about 73 percent of moms get out- side help for breastfeeding problems. Here are some facts on breast- feeding and the benefits for mom and baby: Benets for mom • Breastfeeding burns up to an extra 500 calories per day. • For moms, breastfeeding re- duces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer later in life. Benets for baby • Breast milk provides baby with all the necessary nutrients for healthy development. It also con- tains antibodies to ward off common childhood illnesses. • Infants will breastfeed until they feel full. On average, they remove 67 percent of mom's available milk. With a bottle, it's difficult for baby's to self-regulate and babies typically feed until the bottle is empty. • Breastfeeding exposes baby to several different tastes and smells which can influence a child's accep- tance of food when weaning. • Mom's breast milk completes the development of baby's stomach lining, making it 15 times thicker than that of a formula-fed baby. • Breastfeeding helps babies regu- late their breathing (newborns have immature respiratory systems). • Breastfeeding soothes babies and can be a pain reliever — breast milk contains endorphins that calm a fussy baby.
