Ostfeld's research has shown that climate change over the past 20 years in the Hudson Valley has resulted in ticks peaking earlier than we previ- ously thought. "The black-legged tick used to peak early-mid June," he says. "Now it is peaking mid-late May and we project that in 20 years or so they will peak in early May." Babesia and Lyme are the most common pair found in ticks in the Hudson Valley, according to Ostfeld, not Ehrlichiosis. He adds that it is possible for a tick to be infected with more than one disease and to trans- mit more than one disease. Ostfeld suggests that health prac- titioners and families be aware of this and should be testing for more than just Lyme, since they each have specific treatments.
