12 Hudson Valley Parent n April 2017 Repair the broken but beloved Repair cafs started in Europe and in recent years have sprung up all over the Hudson Valley. Members of the community bring an item they would like to have fixed and knowledgeable volunteers repair their lamps, jewel- ry, DVD players, vacuums, whatev- er...,while also showing them how to fix the items themselves. And, it is all FREE. The idea is to decrease what ends up in landfills while passing on the skills necessary to fix everyday items, instead of throwing them away and replacing them. The cafs also hope to foster a greater sense of community. Everyone is invited to attend the Repair Cafs held periodi- cally in Beacon, Gardiner, New Paltz, Rosendale, Warwick, Poughkeepsie, Kingston and Rhinebeck. The next Repair Caf will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 8 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church located at 325 Mill Street in Pough- keepsie. Repaircafehv.org Houseplants with a purpose While plants and flowers are often used for decorative purposes in the home, there are many plants that have air-filtering properties and other positive health benefits. Sur- prisingly, maybe, it's NASA that first led the research decades ago into what plants offered which protec- tions to humans. The space agency had a great interest in how to rid toxins from sealed environments and published a report with their findings. They found peace lil- ies, which grow easily indoors and need little watering, help to rid the air of ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene. Formaldehyde can be found in some household cleaning products. English Ivy is the most effective in removing the remnants of this toxin in the air, and is also suitable to grow indoors as it doesn't need a lot of sunshine to grow. And while aloe vera is popular for its soothing properties for burns or scrapes, it also quite uniquely converts carbon dioxide into oxygen over- night. Never mind it's a nice visual addition to any nightstand. Bringing Hudson Valley families home. 845.256.8868 www.stevensrealtygrp.com STEVENS REALTY GROUP e. ME TIME !
