O ne of the lesser known summer holidays falls in August, so happy "Admit You're Happy Month." With so many things in August that can make you grouchy, it may be hard to celebrate. The heat is at an all-time high (and so is your hair thanks to the humidity); you just realized that all of your children have grown out of their sneakers and there are more mosquito bites on your ankles than there are days left of summer. Just like that, the summer fun you had been looking forward to since January is getting swept away like beach debris. But as you burn your hand on your seat belt for the fifth time today, think about all the things in your life that make you happy. This summer has been full of happy memories for families all over the Hudson Valley. Maybe your daughter finally took the training wheels off of her bike. Maybe your son lost his first tooth. Maybe your teen made a little money at their first job. And hopefully your family vacation (or stay-cation) resulted in photo albums full of smiles, stories to tell for years and a sunburn that will make you never forget that SPF 50 again. As for me, this summer was a memorable one. I spent it busy working at a new job I love, planning a wedding and I finally saw Zac Brown Band in concert. That is enough to make me celebrate happiness all August long. Parents all across the Hudson Valley can use Hudson Valley Parent to amp up the happy in their homes. Moms, take a look at Me Time. Change up your home a little bit and make it a peaceful place for you and your little ones. Feng shui, some essential oil and a new outdoor space just for you are sure to put a smile on your face. Ticks have been rampant this summer. It is important to learn how to prevent tick bites, and be alert for the symptoms of tick borne illnesses. Protect your family and furry friends from ticks and the sicknesses they carry. This month, our magazine contains information on just how to do that. Healthy families are happy families. My twin spent weeks this summer sick from a tick bite he got at an ultimate Frisbee tournament. Thankfully, my mother recognized the symptoms and got him the treatment he needed. The care he received from Hudson Valley doctors and his speedy recovery are huge reasons for my family to be happy this August. As you shake the last bit of sand out of your shoes, remember to always take the time to smile at the little things. Hug your little ones as they get ready to head off to kindergarten, and hug them tighter when you pack up the car to send them off to college. August is a time of transitions and a time of change; between grades in school and between seasons. Spend your last days of summer soaking up the sun and all of the smiles with an ice-cold lemonade in your hand and Hudson Valley Parent magazine on your lap! Summer makes me happy CASSIDY BRIGHTON Editor's Journal
