Additionally, risk factors for the devel- opment of sleep apnea include: family history of the disease, being overweight, defects in the structure of the mouth and jaw, and/or having a large tongue. What are the risks associated with sleep apnea? Sleep apnea can be in- credibly dangerous if it goes undiagnosed. Those who are not taking treat- ment for the disease have a higher chance of both stroke and heart dis- ease compared to those ™Š'ƒ"‡•'–ƒˆÐŽ‹…–‡†ä What can I do? Pediatric sleep breathing disorders do not only affect your child on a daily basis, but can lead to several dif- ferent behavioral and psychological disorders as well. Developing problems at home and at school as well as their social life can often turn into a downward spiral. How do I know my child is at risk or has a sleep breathing disorder? If your child has any of the following signs, it is im- portant to have them checked to identify the root of the problem and develop a treatment plan (which do not require surgery or medication): Excessive daytime sleepiness (often resulting in irritability, anger, de- pression, and headaches), trouble sleeping, snoring/ mouth breathing/teeth grinding, nightmares, night terrors, night sweats/restless sleep, ADD/ADHD, sleep walking, bedwetting or poor performance in school.
