Another hazy Hudson Valley summer is behind us and the crisp winds of fall have begun to blow. Orchards and pumpkin patches are full of happy families decked out in flannel. Little mouths and hands are sticky with cinnamon sugar from warm cider donuts and the caramel off of a candied apple. And you already have a Pinterest board full of ideas for this year's epic family costume. A healthy diet might be the last thing on your mind this month. Pillsbury place-and-bake ghost cookies eerily find their way into your grocery cart each week and candy corn is the closest your kids have come to eating vegetables all month. But could your diet be causing you pain? Are there foods that you should avoid at all costs? This month, trusted doctor Padma Garvey shares the secrets of nightshade vegetables with parents. She insists that a change in your diet could change your life and even provides an easy, healthy recipe that you can try any night of the week (even on the busy nights when your daughter has soccer practice and your son has piano lessons). When I was young, the scariest part of October was the fake spiders my brothers would leave on my pillow and the creepy masks my dad would wear every Halloween. Parents have other fears that extend far past October 31st. Something scarier than any goblin or ghoul for a parent is having a child who appears depressed. This month, we provide parents with valuable advice on how to talk to their tweens and teens about their mental health. Communication is key and Dr. Paul Schwartz and a local mom have the tips to help you open up a dialogue with your child about depression. A scary thought for some moms is having to look for a lawyer to help them navigate decisions for their child with special needs. This month, local lawyers sound off and give parents advice. If you need an advocate for your child, it may be time to turn to an attorney. Not knowing where to turn can be an even bigger worry. That's why Hudson Valley Parent has put together a valuable guide full of the top 84 lawyers in the Hudson Valley that were nominated by parents like you! Whether you are looking for a lawyer to help you get the best services for your child, you are buying a new home or you are planning for the future, a trusted lawyer will be an important asset. See more of what moms have said about these helpful, dedicated lawyers at LawGuide.HVParent.com. October doesn't need to be scary. We've rounded up tons of fright- free events that your whole family will enjoy (plus stuff with a little more jump for your teens). Check out HVParent.com/No-Scare- Halloween for tons of events! How are you spending your fall weekends? I'll be headed to a corn maze with a pumpkin spice latte in hand! Have no fear, HV Parent is here CASSIDY BRIGHTON Editor's Journal
