24 Hudson Valley Parent n May 2014 schools have integrated technology into their curriculum, it's clear that there's no going back now. "Kids today are the product of an electronic world," says Tim Potts, who's taught social studies to middle schoolers in the Monticello Central School District for 24 years. "If you think you're going to do 'chalk and talk' in front of them in 2014, you're kidding yourself. If you think you're not going to incorporate technology into your classroom, you're kidding yourself. You're going to have to up- grade because of the life they live." "When I started my career in 1990, smartboards were just being introduced," says Lisa Landau, a 2nd grade teacher at North Main Street Elementary School in Monroe for the past 24 years. "Now 1.5 million iPads are used in U.S. schools and 90 percent of students under 18 have access to mobile technology. That makes a huge difference in education and we as educators need to grow along with that." Landau feels parents shouldn't ex- pect their children's classrooms to be run in the same manner as they were when they themselves were students. "Years ago we used to stand in front of a classroom and lecture, and today that won't work" she says. "You really need grab their attention. They're used to videogames and jazzy images. With smartboard technol- ogy and iPads we can grab their attention. Just today I was teaching a lesson on estimation in math. I de- signed a lesson using the smartboard with images and sound and then had students come up to write on the smartboard, press things, and have that interactive experience."
