A lthough the summer school vacation may seem far off, now is the right time to start planning how your chil- dren will spend their time after classes let out and the weather gets hot. Camp helps to keep up the momentum on a child's schedule. It also offers continued enrichment and provides new avenues for children to explore and make new friends outside of their regular school-year social circle. There's also the increased physical fitness that comes with being outside more often than sitting behind a desk. These aspects of summer camp might be even more important today than they were just a short time ago, with so many children glued to digi- tal devices and video games. The activities at summer camp cultivate increased social interaction and offer old-fashioned, hands-on activities that gives young people inspiration to do more of the same when school is back in session. Camp should be about exploration and fun - offering children a chance to relax for a bit when away from the structured schedule of learning, homework and test taking - but parents, of course, want to make an informed decision about where their children will be spending their time while away from home. Hudson Valley Parent is here to offer a helping hand in the process. Next month, the magazine fea- tures another camp guide to show- case all of the fascinating places in the valley to engage your little ones, elementary school students, tweens and teens during the school break.
