T he best place for children to receive medical care is at their pediatrician's office. However, we know kids don't wait for office hours to get sick. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends caregivers should never hesitate to call the pediatrician's office first. Pediatricians are accustomed to taking phone calls at all times and can often deal with problems over the phone or direct you to the appropriate level of care. Life-threatening emergencies should be handled in the ER. These include breathing difficulties (including severe asthma attacks), severe trauma, seizures, severe allergic reactions and head or neck injuries. If your child's injury or illness is not life-threatening, but needs attention quickly and your pediatrician's office is closed, Urgent Care is the way to go. Urgent Care is similar to the pediatrician's, with a few added services, like x-ray capabilities. Excel Urgent Care 1 Hatfield Ln., Goshen. 360-5530. 1004 Main St., Fishkill. 765-2240.
