The leaves are beautiful shades of crimson and orange, apple orchards are full of happy families filling their totes and I can smell the faint scent of pumpkin spice drifting through the crisp autumn air. Families all over are spending their weekends dashing around corn mazes and sipping cider at festivals celebrating the change of season. This fall is even more incredible than usual, thanks to all of you and your incredible kids! With the help of our sponsor, Children's Medical Group and parents like you, we were able to round up tons of kids who lead their teams, stand for justice and never give up. It is heart warming to read stories of kids who are so brave, smart and all around wonderful. Stories about kids persevering through illnesses or injuries, kids who help out at home when new siblings are added to the mix and kids who are all-stars on and off the field filled our inboxes. Kids all around the valley are making this community a better place just by being them. These kids wouldn't be half as incredible if they didn't have parents like you! The Hudson Valley Parent readership and their families truly are some incredible people. Did you miss your chance to submit but still think your kid deserves to be recognized? Let us know! Submit pictures to and your kid could appear on the cover of our magazine in 2018. It's the least we could do to thank them for being so INCREDIBLE! Now that the hazy days of summer have come to an end, moms are so busy with their jobs and their families, it may not seem like there is even one extra second in the day. Don't let the craziness trick you into losing it. Treat yourself with a well-deserved break. When I was a kid, October meant that I got to wear a cool costume and stuff my face with Twizzlers until my head hurt. My costumes were always inexpensive and DIY, but never lacked in creativity (thanks to my mom). One year I was "sleeping beauty," dressed in footed pajamas and a dollar store crown. I was the hit of the block! For some families, Halloween isn't nearly as fun. The 31st is right around the corner, but haunted houses aren't the only frightening things. Does your kid hate itchy costumes and face paint? Are the strobe lights and fog machines a little too overwhelming? K. Rielly, local mom and HVP blogger, has 13 tips for you if Halloween has gone from a chance to steal mini Snickers bars while your kid sleeps, to a full blown disaster of a holiday. Spending an evening by a campfire telling spooky stories after a long day of pumpkin carving is my kind of paradise. And I know I will find myself at some of the events on our calendar. Maybe I will see you there! Autumn in the Hudson Valley is incredible CASSIDY BRIGHTON Editor's Journal
